Rosemont Ridge Middle School
Our Design: The design committee for Rosemont Ridge, made up of teachers, parents, students and administrators, considered how school needs and spaces fit together. They worked to create the organizing concepts for the school's design.
Another key idea of the committee was to feature the media center as a central place, since it is the hub of communications, and a resource for all houses. It's lowered elevation allows the activity there to be viewed from the hallways and public spaces. The design team also wished to have many areas in the school where students work can be displayed. At the entrance to each house, student work is displayed. The Great Wall of Tiles: One of the artistic places is the hallway connecting the commons with the front entrance. Here, tiles made by many of our school family brighten the wall. These tiles symbolize our goal of creating one new community from many, illustrating the uniqueness of the people who make up Rosemont Ridge. We Are Wired: At the entrance to each house there is a flat screen monitor. These monitors are used to display student video and multi-media presentations. Often visitors will see at the front entrance and Power Point presentation reflecting on past student activities or future student events. Every classroom has WEB access and connection to the library electronic catalog. The Library Media Center subscribes to the EBSCO online database, which can be accessed from school and at home from the Rosemont WEB Page. Where the Past Meets the Future: Even though Rosemont enjoys high tech capacity and modern spaces, we have many connections to our past and the outside environment. Colors and materials in the building are inspired by the surrounding landscape. We have low -tech instruction tools, too, such as the chalkboards at the entry to each classroom and white boards in the shared learning areas, suitable for spontaneous messages. Courtyards and exterior landscaping double as learning spaces by featuring native plants and useful herbs. Theatre chairs, circa 1925, lend a sense of history outside the choir room and provide a place to wait and converse. Distinctive benches supported by large natural boulders are the gift of PTO and the '98-'99 Bolton student body. They bring a bit of the outside into the school, and provide a unique and artistic practical feature. Where the Kids Are Coyotes: Through a contest conducted by the students at Bolton Middle School. The coyote was selected for the Rosemont Ridge mascot. Students feel that the coyote represents the qualities of strength and persistence. These are qualities that students would like to have for a positive and enduring learning experience at their new school.
