• Music Theory Fundamentals

    Course Description

    Music theory is the field of study that deals with how music works.  It examince the langurage and notation of music.  It identifies patterns that govern composition techniques.  Music theory analyzes the elements of music-rhythm, harmony, melody, structure, form and texture.

     

    UNITS OF STUDY

    THE BASICS OF MUSIC:  THE MUSIC STAFF, MUSIC SYMBOLS, THE KEYBOARD

    PITCH:  ENHARMONIC PITCHES, OCTAVE IDENTIFICATION, DYNAMICS

    MAJOR AND MINOR SCALES AND KEY SIGNATURES:  MAJOR SCALES AND KEY SIGNATURES, MINOR SCALES AND KEY SIGNATURES

    TRIADS:  MAJOR, MINOR, AUGMENTED, DIMINISHED

    RHYTHM:  RHYTHM NOTATION,, SIMPLE METER, COMPOUND METER

    CHORD PROGRESSION:  CHORD PROGRESSIONS, CADENCES

     

    LEARNING TARGETS:

    1.  STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF AND USE OF THE GRAND STAFF (TREBLE AND BASS CLEF) 
    AND EXTENSION OF THE STAFF THROUGH THE USE OF LEDGER LINES

    2.  THE STUDENT WILL IDENTIFY THE LETTER NAMES OF THE LINES AND SPACES ON BOTH BASS AND TREBLE CLEFS.

    3.  THE STUDENT WILL IDENTIFY AND DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF VARIOUS TIME DURATION NOTE VALUES (WHOLE, HALF, QUARTER, EIGHTH, ETC.)  

    4.  THE STUDENT WILL INDENTIFY TIME SIGNATURES, BAR LINES, AND OTHER MUSIC NOTATION SYMBOLS.

    5.  THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CONSTRUCT TRIADS USING SPECFIC PATTERNS AND FORMULAS.

    6.  THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY KEY SIGNATURES.

    7.  THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYZE BASIC CHORD PROGRESSIONS USING ROMAN NUMERALS.
