One Student Domain
We are planning an important update to our student email system and password requirements to improve security, streamline communication, and ensure compliance with cybersecurity standards.
What’s Changing?
- Unified Student Email Domain
- Currently, student email addresses vary by school domain. We will move to a single domain:
[lastname][first initial][second letter of first name if needed][grad year]@stu.wlwv.k12.or.us - Example: smithjo27@stu.wlwv.k12.or.us
- Why include the graduation year?
Adding the grad year helps avoid collisions when combining all students from multiple schools into one domain.
- Currently, student email addresses vary by school domain. We will move to a single domain:
- Why This Change?
- Prevents Account Reuse: Stops students from inheriting siblings’ online curriculum accounts, as many platforms use email as a unique identifier.
- Consistency Across Grades: Students will keep the same email throughout their time in the district, rather than changing addresses when moving to middle or high school.
- Smooth Transition: Students will receive their new email address in advance. Their old email will remain as an alias for continued communication.
Password Policy Updates
- Grades 6–12:
- Students will set their own password (minimum 8 characters with strong password enforcement).
- Passwords will not expire unless compromised.
- Students will be asked to update passwords during this school year, with reminders sent.
- A mandatory password change will occur near the start of the 2026–2027 school year (end of second week).
- Grades K–5:
- Students will use Clever Badges for Chromebook login.
- Kindergarten and many 1st/2nd graders already use this system.
- 4th and 5th graders will set a 6-digit PIN for added security.
Why This Matters
- Enhances account security for all students.
- Meets cybersecurity insurance requirements.
- Reduces confusion and administrative overhead.
