Learning to keyboard is an important skill. When students become proficient in keyboarding, they will be able to enter words faster than they can be produced by using paper and pencil. They will be able to create documents, use search tools and communicate with others while using the computer with greater ease.
The district has licensed a new keyboarding program called TypingAgent (https://wlwv.typingagent.com/). This new program is web-based and can run on computers (Macintosh and PC) as well as on iPads and Chromebooks. It can also be used at home without having to install anything - it runs within any mainstream, current web browser.
Students in Grades 1-5 have access to TypingAgent for practice at home or at school.
A student can login using the Google link for authentication. Unless already logged into their Google account, the user will be prompted to enter their school Google account username and password.
Tips for Keyboarding Success:
Regular practice helps create finger memory.
Remember that when we practice, we get better. You will make progress that is right for you.
Accuracy and using the correct fingering is more important than speed. Words per minute (wpm) will increase with practice.
Sit up straight, feet flat on the floor, belly-button lined up to the “B” key.
Look at the screen, not at your hands.
Keep your fingers on home row position, fingers slightly curved, your wrists straight. Your thumbs should rest on the space bar. Rest your elbows naturally next to your body.
Work slowly and steadily. Speed comes with practice, and it is more important to strike the correct key with the correct finger than to hunt and peck or hover around the keyboard.
Take breaks when your hands get tired. Shake your hands and walk a bit.
Remember there are two shift keys. Use the right shift while typing capital letters with your left hand, and the left shift to type capitals with your right hand.
