College Admission Testing (ACT, SAT/PSAT & SAT Prep)
SAT & ACT
The SAT and the ACT are both college admission tests. Both are accepted for admission into most colleges and universities. Wilsonville High School is a test administration site for the SAT in May of each year. All other administrations of both tests must be taken elsewhere. Students must go directly to the website for the respective tests for which they would like to register to select their test location (www.sat.org or www.act.org). If a student needs to take a test, it is recommended that students begin taking their SAT and/or ACT in the spring of their junior year and no later than December of their senior year. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, most colleges (over 1,600) have dropped the testing requirement from the admissions process. Students should make sure to check the admissions sites of the schools to which they plan to apply or contact their Graduation Mentor.
ACT The ACT includes a 75-question 45-minute English test; a 40-question, 35-minute reading test; a 60-question, 60-minute math test; a 40-question, 35-minute science test; and an optional 30-minute writing test. Most colleges will prefer that students choose to take the writing test as part of their ACT. Click here for the 2020/21 ACT calendar.
SAT The SAT includes an ‘Evidence-based Reading and Writing’ section, a Math section, and an optional essay. The reading section contains 52 items and is 65 minutes long. The writing and language section contains 44 items and is 35 minutes in length. The math section contains 58 items and is 80 minutes long. The optional essay contains one prompt, with 50 minutes allotted. Click here for the 2020/21 SAT calendar. Watch this video from College Board that addresses questions about when to take the test,
Fee Waivers are available for students who are unable to pay for either test (students should contact their counselor or Lyndi Tucker).
The PSAT is a preliminary or practice test that is recommended before the SAT. The PSAT is offered nationally each year in October. College-bound juniors are strongly encouraged to take the PSAT as preparation for the SAT. In 2020, the PSAT will be administered in January at ATHS.
