West Linn-Wilsonville School District to hold Dedication Ceremony for Sunset Primary

    When: Friday, Sept. 29, 5:30 p.m.

Where: Sunset Primary School, 2351 Oxford Street, West Linn

The West Linn-Wilsonville School District will host an official dedication ceremony for Sunset Primary School Friday, Sept. 29 at 5:30 p.m. The school will receive a plaque to commemorate years of planning and months of construction, which culminated in the opening of the building for the first day of school Aug. 29.

Students have enjoyed their new school the past few weeks, and now look forward to sharing their learning space with the greater West Linn community for the first time. The school will be open to families and community members who wish to tour the school, with student docents available in each learning porch to answer questions. A short ceremony will commence shortly after 5:30 p.m. in the school’s gym, where Superintendent Kathy Ludwig, School Board Chair Ginger Fitch, and others will give brief presentations. The evening will culminate with a ribbon cutting.

Sunset Primary is the West Linn-Wilsonville School District’s oldest school, dating all the way back to 1890. Originally called West Oregon City School, the school now known as Sunset was the first school in Oregon to provide transportation — coming in the form of a horse and wagon in 1904. The original building was replaced with a new school in 1917, which burned down in 1940. Built in 1930, the school’s gym survived the fire and remained in use up until last school year.

Sunset Primary is a result of the 2014 Capital Bond, costing a total of approximately $24 million to complete. The school includes a full gymnasium, stage, music room, library, and covered play area. Construction on the school’s visitor parking lot and play field, meanwhile, will continue through the fall.

Dear West Linn-Wilsonville School District Subscriber,

Capital Bond News: Sunset Primary School

    Music Room

The contractor continues to make significant progress at Sunset Primary School. A brief summary of the recent and upcoming work is outlined below.

Work in the western portion of the site, including the existing building is on or ahead of schedule. The last day of school at the existing Sunset Primary School building was Tuesday June 20, later than originally scheduled due to the winter weather this year. District staff and professional movers packed and emptied the building by the end of June 25. This accelerated moving process allowed the abatement and demolition to begin as originally scheduled on June 26. The abatement is currently anticipated to be completed ahead of schedule, which may allow select demolition to begin as soon as next week. Additional construction fencing is scheduled to arrive to secure the existing building area next week. Demolition and mass excavation for the western half of the site is expected to be complete ahead of the start of school as scheduled. Construction of the play field and western parking lot will continue into the fall as originally planned.

Work in the right-of-way is currently on schedule for completion before the start of school. This scope includes new curbs, sidewalks and street paving as well as improved storm water management, landscaping and street trees. Most of the storm water lines have already been placed and manholes and catch basins will be installed in the coming days. Excavation for new curbs and sidewalks will begin soon along Oxford Street and Bittner Street.

The new school building along with playground, fire lanes and surrounding landscaping are on schedule for completion before the start of school. Almost all the brick has been installed and siding is working its way around the building. Mechanical units are in place and final duct is being installed. Plumbing fixtures are being installed and light fixtures are being wired. Almost all exterior windows are in place, and doors are being hung. Sheetrock is essentially complete, and painting is well on the way to completion. Much of the ceiling grid is in place and ceiling tile installation has begun. Cabinetry installation is well underway and flooring installation has started. Gym equipment has been installed and stage curtains have arrived on site. Excavation for site concrete and playground areas is underway, with play equipment delivery in the coming weeks. Furniture deliveries remain on schedule for the first week of August. Movers will return mid-August to deliver items stored over the summer.
