    Athletic/Activity Code of Conduct

Membership in an athletic and/or activity program is an honor that should be carefully guarded.  The privilege of competing in athletics and/or activities carries added responsibility for each participant, a privilege that may be forfeited for conduct that is detrimental to the team, school, or program in general.  As a participant in an extracurricular school program, a student’s behavior on campus, in the community, during competitions, and at other schools reflects not only on the student, but on the program and school as well.

    WLWV Student-Athlete/Activity Code of Conduct

    WLWV Fans Code of Conduct

In keeping with the District’s goal of teaching and demonstrating the highest levels of sportsmanship during athletic contests, fans are expected to demonstrate conduct appropriate for high school activities at all times.  The West Linn-Wilsonville District’s expectations for positive fan behavior is greater than one would expect to see tolerated at college or professional sports events. Fans may not:

    1.  Engage any beings in an angry or aggressive manner on school property or at school activities.  This includes officials, coaches, other fans, parents, students or school personnel.

    2.  Use swear words or vulgarity on school property or at school activities.

    3.  Threaten verbally or physically, any person including officials, fans, coaches, players, spectators, or school personnel at any time on school property or at school activities.

    4.  Create public displays of anger and/or displeasure.

    5.  Violation of these standards may result in the removal of the fan from the school.

    Conflict Resolution Policy

Philosophy - We are in the business of educating and supporting students and staff.  Learning how to respectfully address concerns and conflicts in a direct manner with the specific person(s) is an important skill.  Also, many conflicts arise from miscommunication, misunderstanding, and/or impartial knowledge.  Many conflicts can be easily resolved by gathering all appropriate parties in the room and having a face to face conversation.

Periodically, concerns and conflicts will arise which need to be quickly and amicably resolved for the harmonious operation of either the educational program, or the student’s well-being.

The solutions to these problems or conflicts should be handled in the following sequence:

STEP 1:  Coach and student-athlete meet (in person).

    STEP 2:  Coach, student-athlete, and parent/guardian meet.

STEP 3:  Coach, student-athlete, parent/guardian and Athletic Director meet.

STEP 4: Meet with the principal.

STEP 5: Meet with district personnel.

    General Guidelines For Conflict Resolution

    • Do not confront in an angry, aggressive manner.
    • Do not make personal attacks – stick to issues.
    • Only discuss issues regarding the people present in the meeting.
    • Discuss concerns in a private scheduled meeting.
    • Attend such meetings with a problem-solving attitude.
    • Respect other roles, responsibilities and decision-making rights within their defined roles.

    Participation Rules

Representing WLWV as a part of an athletic/activity program is a privilege. WLWV expects a high standard of conduct for those students choosing to represent their school. The goal of these guidelines is to communicate District expectations and to encourage students to strive for personal improvement while bringing credit to themselves, their team and their school. These standards apply to all students who choose to represent their school as participants in athletic/activity programs. These standards are applicable for the entire calendar year (calendar year is 12 months from the date signed on the code of conduct):

Attendance at school, practice, and contests

    1. Student-athletes are expected to be in attendance at school the entire school day to be eligible for athletics and/or activities (this includes practice or competition) that day. After school detention will have priority over such activities. Student handbook policies related to valid pre-arranged absences (medical appointments, for example) apply to participation, as well.

    2. Student-athletes are expected to be at every practice and game. If a student is to be absent for any reason they are required to notify their coach prior to the practice or contest. If the coach is not notified it will be considered an unexcused absence.

    3. Each team will have rules in dealing with tardiness to practice/contests or missed practices/contests due to illness, appointments, family business, or job commitments.

    General

    1. All participation fees must be paid before participation in any contests is allowed.  In addition, all school fines and fees must also be paid.

    2. The WLWV school district plans to provide transportation to school sponsored athletic/activity events. Student-athletes should ride to and from the event in vehicles provided by the school, unless they have permission from their coach to ride with their parent/guardian. When a student-athlete needs to transport themselves or ride with someone other than a parent/guardian, the transportation contract must be signed, returned to the athletic office, and approved 24 hours prior to the event.

    3. A participant must have on file a record of one current physical examination every two years since beginning high school, proper insurance, and have an active Student Body Card.

    4. A participant must have paid for all purchased uniforms, turned in all equipment or paid for any lost equipment before participating in any additional contests.

    Behavior

    1. Student-athletes in WLWV are expected to demonstrate the ideals of good sportsmanship, team loyalty, school loyalty and achievement through effort and sacrifice. Students/athletes are subject to disciplinary action by their coach/advisor and administration for any misconduct any time and any place that is deemed to be unbecoming of a student/athlete representing WLWV and this community.

    2. Student-athletes are required to follow the guidelines outlined in the Student-Handbook as well as WLWV School Board Policies.

    3. Athletic/activity training standards require that participants agree not to promote, possess, use, sell, or be under the influence of any controlled substance including illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or nicotine (this includes “look alike drugs”) on or off campus at any time.  In addition, participating students who are in the presence of other students or individuals in violation of this policy are expected to take all reasonable actions necessary to leave the premises immediately where such illegal activity is occurring, even if the participating student is not using or possessing or distributing alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or paraphernalia. For any infractions for the above content, please see the Administrative Guidelines below for consequences.

    4. Infractions for the above content may result in consequences that will have an impact on a student athlete's ability to participate for WLWV.

    5. The use of social media is an integral part of communication and can connect people in various ways. WLWV expects all of our student-athletes who use social media platforms to adhere to the following:

    • I take responsibility for my online profile, including my posts and any photos, videos or other recordings posted by others in which I appear.
    • I will not degrade my opponents before, during, or after games.
    • I will post only positive things about my teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials.
    • I will use social media to purposefully promote abilities, team, community, and social values. I will consider "Is this the person I want you to see?" before I post anything online.
    • I will ignore any negative comments about me and I will not retaliate.
    • If I see a teammate post something potentially negative online, I will have a conversation with that teammate. If I do not feel comfortable doing so, I will talk to the team captain, or a coach.
    • I am aware that I represent my sport(s), school, team, family and community at all times, and will do so in a positive manner.
    • Any misuse of social media may result in consequences that will have an impact on a student athlete's ability to participate for WLWV.
    1. For questions concerning disciplinary action for all behavior situations including harassment and illegal substances, see the Student Handbook.

    1. A participant may not drop from one sport team and transfer to another without agreement of both coaches and the athletic director.

    Administrative Guidelines

Substance-Abuse Policy:  student-athletes, while attending any WLWV District High School, who violate rules, will be subject to the consequences listed below:

Any participant incurring any infraction on school premises during school hours, away from school, on school or non-school days or at any school-sponsored sport will be subject to the same sanctions as any other student.

A: First Violation will result in an athletic suspension from competitions for 10% of the season beginning with the first contest. All calculations will be rounded up; for example 2.3 games will be three games missed.

Substance Abuse Assessment: The student will be required to complete a chemical abuse assessment at the parent's expense from an approved outside assessor. The outside assessor will develop an individualized program to assist the student to become and remain drug/alcohol free. The student and parent(s) and or guardian(s) agree to follow the program developed by the outside assessor. The student will remain suspended from competition until the chemical abuse assessment has been administered. The student will be required to attend any practice sessions, team meetings, or competitions following the arrangement of his/her chemical assessment appointment. If a student has been suspended from school, they will not be able to participate in any school activities while suspended. Please see appendices at the end of the handbook for assessment centers.

B: Second Violation: The District will follow the same procedure as set forth for a first violation including an additional assessment at the parent's expense, except that for a second violation (not in the same season/performance period); the suspension from interscholastic competition/performance will be for 25% of the season beginning with the first competition contest. All calculations will be rounded up. If it is the 2nd violation, the Administration office consequences will hold precedence over those stated here. If a student has committed an offense whereby they may be considered eligible for expulsion then the school administration’s consequences will take precedence.

C: Third violation: The student-athlete will be removed from their current team and not be allowed to participate with any other athletic teams for 90 school days. If the athlete does not have a third infraction, the cycle of violations for an athlete will start over after each beginning of next school year.

D: Association Violation Any student participating in athletics who finds himself/herself in the company of others, who illegally possess, use, transmit, or are under the influence of alcohol, any form of dangerous drugs, or a controlled substance is expected to leave immediately (within a reasonable time frame – time to secure a ride, safe transportation). Failure to do so will result in notification of the parent/guardian and the possibility of the same consequences listed above in Section A above as determined by the Athletic Director.

A second offense will result in discipline as if in violation of this policy. The only exception to this section of this policy would be when a parent/guardian accompanies a student to a family, social or cultural function where alcohol is served. However, students must refrain from personal use. Students who receive wine as part of a religious ceremony such as Holy Communion or Jewish Seder will not be penalized.

    E. In Season: The student will be suspended from any interscholastic athletic practice or competition for the duration of any out-of-school suspension/expulsion.

    F. End of or Out-of-Season If the student-athlete is nearing the end or is not currently in a season, a first violation will result in an athletic suspension that follows the penalties for in-season violations except that the suspension will commence from the first contest date from the student’s next season of participation. Any student athlete serving an athletic suspension will be required to attend and participate in all practices, team meetings and competition although they will not be permitted to actively participate in competitions.

    G. Self-Reporting Prior to being investigated or apprehended for a violation involving the use of alcohol, dangerous drugs or a controlled substance, the student may voluntarily request assistance from school officials. In the event of this self-reporting, there may be no disciplinary consequences imposed upon the student provided that:

G.1 The report is independent and in advance of the investigation.

G.2 The student completes a drug assessment and complies with their recommendations.

G.3 Subsequent incidents of alcohol, dangerous drugs, or controlled substance use will result in a Second Violation.

    H. Transfer of Violation

A student who transfers from one West Linn/Wilsonville School District High School to another will maintain a cumulative offense status under this policy.
