Safe & Welcoming Schools for ALL Students
-
Recent federal immigration news and actions have raised questions from our community regarding what it means for students and families in West Linn-Wilsonville. The West Linn-Wilsonville School District remains committed to every student’s right to an education. The following information and resources may be helpful for families and neighbors supporting one another during these uncertain times.
State of Oregon Legal Protections
The State of Oregon’s Sanctuary Law prohibits state and local law enforcement from assisting federal officials immigration actions such as arresting or detaining people based only on immigration status. (ORS 181A.820 Oregon Sanctuary Law). This provides protection for WLWV students during the entirety of the school day, including during bus transportation to and from school and during co-curricular activities. Our schools do not play a role in immigration enforcement. The Oregon Student Information Protection Act protects student educational records from use for immigration action. (ORS 336.184-187 Oregon Student Information Protection Act).
Educating and Supporting All Students
Regardless of individuals’ political or personal beliefs, our expectation is that ALL students, staff members, and visitors to our schools demonstrate care and respect to one another. We serve all students, no matter their place of birth or personal circumstance. Our non-discrimination and anti-bullying policies specifically recognize national origin as a protected class.
