From caring comes courage, not to keep, but to give away.

I was born and raised in Oregon and West Linn has been my home for more than 25 years. My work has taken me into hospitals, clinics, summer camps, and rehab units. Since 2011, I've supported students, staff, and families in this district. I have supported students, staff, and families since 2011, but have been part of this community for much longer. Both my daughters went through the WLWV school district.

I am a lifelong learner and work to ensure that our district's inclusive practices are attainable. I educate, advocate, delegate, and celebrate. I am a Nationally Certified School Nurse (NCSN), and member os NASN (National Association of School Nurses) and OSNA (Oregon School Nurses Association).

Our health care system has shifted in the 40 years I've been a registered nurse. In that time, I've seen many changes in our healthcare system. But what remains constant is that each of us play a vital role in the health of our community through communication, health education, personal responsibility, poly/systems, and environmental changes.

Giving courage to others as I care for them.

I am a transplant from the East Coast.  I have been a nurse for over twenty five years, working almost exclusively in pediatrics.  When I moved to Portland, I slowly transitioned to working as a district nurse.  I have taken my many years of experience in primary and urgent care and applied them to caring for students and families in the school setting.

Michelle Bloom

My name is Michelle Bloom and I started in the WLWV School District as a District Nurse in 2018. I have been a nurse since 2007. I hold memberships in the National Association for School Nursing (NASN), the Oregon School Nurses Association (OSNA), and I am a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN).

Pediatric care is my passion and my happy place! My entire career has been spent serving the pediatric population ages 0 to 18+, whether through inpatient hospital stays, outpatient visits, or now currently during the school day. I enjoy partnering with students and their families to ensure that students are safe and successful in the school setting.

When I am not busy at West Linn or Riverside High Schools, you can usually find me trying to keep up with my kids and all their activities!

My career in nursing started at Linfield University 30 years ago. I had the privilege of working in the hospital setting on the labor and delivery floor, working, teaching, and caring for new parents and families for many years, then teaching childbirth classes and seeing patients at a local OB/GYN clinic. In this role, I really began to integrate and deepen my understanding of health and how our physical and emotional wellness can be so intertwined.

In 2017, I started working at the West Linn-Wilsonville School District as a district nurse. It is an honor and privilege to serve and care for the students and families in our district. Being a district nurse brings all aspects of the nursing and educational process together. I am grateful that my nursing career has touched on various stages of life and human development. I value the relationships with families, the opportunities to learn from one another, and the opportunities to work together to create safe, healthy, and thoughtful students.

In terms of jobs I have held, it has been a long and varied path that has led me to nursing. Just a few of the jobs I have held are: building storage tanks which required learning arc welding and fiberglass coating, to a mental health therapist in residential treatment with both latency age and adolescents, to a paralegal in the public defender's office working with the Native American population under the tutelage of an attorney who is an Indian Child Welfare Act expert. I have also worked in retail sales and as a teaching assistant in a residential treatment setting, and again as a mental health specialist in two detention facilities.

As my son will tell you, all the years and varied experiences make me old. What I will tell you is that it makes me well-seasoned with the predominant, overarching principle binding all of those endeavors together, being one of service. The majority of those jobs required that I attempted to help those who either had no voice, or that I help lend a voice to those whose voices were muffled and indistinct. Of all of those occupations, it has been in nursing that I have found the strongest connection to service.

I have lived in Oregon all but one challenging year spent in Southern California. My family chose West Linn in which to live in 2008 specifically for the schools and education that it offered our only child and now that he is off to college. It is my privilege to work in the district now as a culmination of my life's experiences.

Since 2008, I have been immersed in the dynamic field of healthcare. My professional journey commenced in the fast-paced realm of Medical-Surgical nursing, where I honed essential skills and gained invaluable experience.

In 2010, a significant shift occurred as I embraced the role of a school nurse, finding profound fulfillment in contributing to the well-being of students. This transformative phase continued to unfold at the West Linn-Wilsonville School District, where I've been an integral part of the healthcare team since 2013. Here, I've not only provided essential medical care but also cultivated a nurturing environment for students to thrive.

Beyond the realm of healthcare, I cherish family time and the adventures of travel. Whether exploring new cultures or creating lasting memories with loved ones, these experiences fuel my passion and add depth to my perspective. This unique blend of personal and professional influences shapes my commitment to blending the best of both worlds, offering compassionate and comprehensive nursing care as I continue my journey.

Mikal Lorio

My name is Mikal Lorio and I have been a West Linn-Wilsonville District Nurse since 2021. My family and I have lived in Wilsonville since 1996 and both of my children went through WLWV schools and graduated from Wilsonville High school.

I have been a registered nurse since 1994 and have worked in Trauma-Neuro, Cardiac, and surgical ICU’s, on a kidney and liver transplant unit, conducted research for a head and neck cancer study, worked in Interventional Radiology, and spent many years as a post-procedure recovery nurse before joining the District Nursing team.

In my spare time I am outdoors as much as possible and love to wing foil in the Columbia River gorge, surf, mountain bike, hike and go backpacking. Travel is one of my great passions and my goal is to visit all 50 states (28 down and 22 left to go!) and all of the National Parks in the US.
